What Is Lupus

Lupus is a chronic disease that can affect anyone. It is an inflammatory disease meaning that it can cause swelling in any part of the body. The most common sites of inflammation though are the joints. Lupus can also affect other parts of the body like skin, blood and the kidneys. This disease usually is not fatal, but can cause death in a few people. The main cause of this disease is the involvement of the immune system. Many would like to know what is lupus because it is one of the diseases that do not seem to be understood well.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease and the actual disease is caused when the human body that has a defense mechanism is not able to differentiate between the antigens in the body and the body’s tissues. The antibodies produced by the system attack the cells and tissues of the person. This causes damage to the various parts of the body and this in turn leads to the characteristic inflammation that is one of the important signs of this disease.

The disease can be of many types and one of the types affects only the skin and this is called as the discoid type of lupus. The other more common type is systemic lupus that can affect any part of the body. This makes this condition very disabling. Various parts of the body can be affected when the person has this condition. The systemic lupus can affect various parts of the body like the skin, blood, nervous system, kidneys, heart, joints, and lungs.

The other type of disease is the drug-induced lupus that can affect any person who is on certain drugs. This is not as common as the systemic or discoid lupus. The fourth type of lupus is the neonatal lupus and as the name indicates, it occurs in neonates who are born to mothers who are affected by systemic lupus.

Lupus is a painful and disabling condition that needs adequate care to decrease the symptoms. The person with the disease has to suffer a lot, not only because of the severity of the disease, but also because there is no permanent cure.

Though a permanent cure is not present for this disease, it has certain methods in which it can be treated. The usual treatment includes anti-inflammatory drugs that will help to reduce the pain and also the inflammations. Other than these drugs, the person can also be treated with steroids that help much more in reducing the pain and the inflammation.
