What Is Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition wherein plaques made up of fatty substances and other cellular substances such as calcium, protein and most especially blood clots build up on the inner lining of the arteries. The process mainly affects blood flow to and from the heart. Since the heart pumps the blood and if blood flow becomes impaired, other organs would have insufficient supply to operate their vital functions and so deteriorating our body. The build up may develop as the patient grows old and other factors such as diet may affect significantly on the process. Several heart diseases may arise as build up continues and many people have died because of this medical condition.

During the start of the build up, the patient may feel no symptom at all. Symptoms may arise if plaques can already interfere with blood circulation. In this stage, the patient may experience myocardial infractions, popularly known as heart attack. The patient may also be prone to stroke since blood flow to the brain is also affected. Several minor symptoms may to be present such as dizziness, nausea, headache and muscular pains. Like any other heart diseases, the patient may suffer from repetitive angina or chest pains especially if the situation inside the arteries is really serious.

There are a lot of factors that may develop to stroke. Family history of cardiovascular ailments may increase the development of heart diseases and atherosclerosis is no exception. A patient diet is also a major factor. Eating too many fatty and oily foods contributes to the build up of plaques inside the arteries. Obese people surely have an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Smoking can also add to damage inside your body. Not only the arteries are being affected but also the lungs are experiencing damages to due to the chemicals brought by smoking.

Treatment is very difficult most especially if the situation is really serious. It is important not to neglect unusual things that you feel. If you have been experiencing chest pains for some time now, there are chances you may have heart ailments. Take note that the symptoms may indicate the severity of the condition. Also take note that there are chances that the only solution of solving your condition is to undergo operations so you should probably go to the hospital now and have your check up.
