What Is Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that affects 30,000 Americans every year making it the most common cancer condition that attack the Americans on a yearly basis. Since it is so deadly, what is squamous cell carcinoma that it actually affects so many Americans every year? The answer lies on the habit of the Americans, due to the study done by the Medical Body of America, over 95% of people who have been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma smokes, drink alcohol and both. The symptoms for an early curable stage are rarely symptomatic, it does not show any signs of the disease. Therefore, in order to prevent this fatal disease, early detection would be advisable.

In America, this medical condition usually occurs to people who are above the age of 50. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most known oral and pharyngeal cancer, which occurs at head and neck sites. The main causes of squamous cell carcinoma are smoking and alcohol abuse. Heavy smoker who smokes more than 2 packs of cigarette a day and a high amount of alcohol consumption that exceeds 6 oz of distilled liquor, 6 oz of wine, or 12 oz of beer a day, which ever the combination is are very prone to this medical condition.

The combination of heavy smoking and alcohol usage raise the risk of getting squamous cell carcinoma of 100 times in women and 38 times in men. Squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue maybe a result from a chronic irritation such as, smoking, overuse of mouthwash, even dental caries. About 40% of the oral squamous cell carcinomas begin on the floor of the mouth and will spread to the whole mouth area. However, 11% of it begin in the palate and tonsillar area, therefore when ever you feel any weird condition in your mouth, it is advisable that you go for medical check up. Squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil usually occurs to males more than the females.

However, since the early stage of squamous cell carcinoma does not show any symptoms but a metastatic mass in the neck may be the first symptom, particularly in tonsillar cancer. Tonsillar carcinoma will usually manifests as an asymmetric swelling and sore throat, with pain radiating towards to the ear.
